Regence BlueCross BlueShield, an insurer in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Utah, recently announced that they are no longer accepting paper claims or issuing paper checks, which have providers all over these four states scrambling to make sure they have the appropriate electronic processes in place to continue working with this major payer. NEA is an electronic attachment clearing house which allows a dental office to transmit attachments, via the Internet, for payers to review in support of electronic claims.
They enroll insurance companies and providers (both paying a fee) into this service so that digital x-rays, perio charts and other electronic supporting documentation can be efficiently and securely shared between provider and insurance company.
You should expect more carriers to adopt an “electronic-only” policy as they attempt to cut administrative costs. This means that the use of a service like NEA will become critical to the flow of information between your office and those payers you and your patients depend upon. You will find that this electronic process is also a time-saver for your staff.
